Merseycats Guestbook

January 13th 2005

Name Ste                From Liverpool

Comment... Hi I sometimes attend the Merseycat Jam Night, and I look up to the guitarists as they are amazing.

And There is one guy on drums (the Disabled Guy) who is the best drummer I have seen in a long time.

Hi Arthur

Funny you should write to me. I was only thinking of you on Tuesday night. I was driving thru a place called Ardee and passed a pub I remembered you playing drums in when you played over here a right few years ago and I also remembered watching you play in a tournament ( Michel of France was also there) and saying to myself, there?s a player I should model myself on as he has all the tricks. I did learn a few of yours and still use them to this day. You were the first player I had ever seen spin the ball off the backboard when shooting and I am glad to say it helped in big games I played in ? ah, the good old days

Peter Barron,

Hi Arthur

You did influence a small part of my game and that was your famous spin shot.
I used it once in a very important game. It was the final of the Andre Vergauwen final in
France to turn the game into victory for Oldham
. It was a very close game and I was brought on in the final 5 mins. I did a top of the key pick with Steve Caine who threaded the ball to me to put up from the left with the famous Arthur Davies spin, in it went and the crowd went mad. We won the game and the cup. This was one of the greatest games i ever played. I have been in a few close games in my 20 years of playing, but this will stay in my memory for a very long time. Sadly like yourself all my old injuries have caught me up and I have had to call it a day. And like yourself I love the game and in those 20 years I don't regret 1 minute of it or any of my injuries. So as long as you can carry on playing arthur do so and I wish you all the best for the future.   Mark Townley ex Oldham

Mondays Mathew Street Festival

sees hastily erected stageOn virtually every street corner.

Several tribute bands performed to high potential!" Bon Giovi"

and the "Counterfeit Stones" probably being best of the bunch,

but original 60s outfit "Faron's Flamingos"came a close second.

BEATS WORKING ISSUE 4 OCTOBER 2002

Disabled but able

Musicians may be getting older and more infirm.

Great example of this is Faron's Flamingo's. Faron is a Rocker who was told he would neverPlay guitar or perform on stage again.

What a thing to happen to the man christened by Bob Wooler Cavern DJ 'Panda Footed Prince of Prance'.In the last 10 years the 60 year old has suffered Five heart attacks, and a stroke, had both hips Replaced and also has metal replacements for bones

In his legs and toes. Faron and his Flamingo's were part of the MerseybeatScene around the time of the Beatles and Gerry and

the Pacemakers, and enjoyed local hits with Do You Love me

See If She Cares and Some Other Guy.

And now Faron's Flamingo's are the ultimate revival Act. Faron's best mate on drums is Arty Davies, whoIs confined to a wheelchair, as he has been a polioSufferer since he was 18 months old and used toWalk on callipers, but 10 years ago, due to worsening

of his condition, he became confined to the chair, and had to

retire from sitting behind the drums.

After watching a band a few years ago he thought ? I can play

better than That? and borrowed a set and is back playing better

than ever.  He crawls onto most stages but once he is behind

the kit,  Faron reckons he is the best Rock n Roll drummer

on Merseyside.  The Flamingo's may have had their wings clipped

, but they are still flying, and performing shows for charity for the

likes of Merseycats and Cheshire Cats, two charities run

by former 60s musicians who raise money for children

both sides of the Mersey.

AND THE BEAT STILL GOES ON  sept 2002

Over 500 packed into St Nicholas Church at Pier head

Liverpool, for Bob Wooler's Funeral in attendance were

Many musicians who he had been aquainted with during

the early 60s, Tony Crane, Bill Kinsley,Ray Ennis, and

Pete Best were amongst the wealth of celebrities who

Were there to play their respects.  A touching tribute

When Tony & Billy were asked to take part in the funeral

Service they sang one of Bob's Favourite songs "Let it Be me"

Their poignant rendition brought out many hankies as Tony &

Billys voices in perfect harmony drifted through the church.

Liverpool's local radio broadcaster Billy Butler and rock

Historian Spencer Leigh both paid tributes in words

At the service.

Later, friends and celebrities and Cavernites mingled

Over a lavish buffet. And at 7 PM the entourage moved

To The Cavern Club, where another buffet was waiting

They turned the clock back to the 60s when Faron's Flamingo's

Took the stage and played 3 numbers. A Final musical tribute

To the man who had been a friend to many of the great Legendary

Merseybeat bands.

R Jenkins Guest book quote.

The Beatles were an exciting stage band when they

Played The Cavern, felt they lost something when the suits

Came. The Only band that could rival them in stage presentation

And excitement, was Faron's Flamingo's.And they still Rock, They may look escapees from an hospital With Faron and his limp, the bald guitarist and a drummer In a wheelchair. They Rock

THE DENNISONS  formed 1961, they were initially influenced

By watching Faron's Flamingo's.

WES PAUL WEBSITE..

QUOTE FROM A YOUNG FAN

Faron's Flamingo's, really rocked I didn?t know that old guys

Could rock like that.

QUOTE FROM A OLD FAN

That's the first time I saw the band since the 60s and I

Couldn?t believe  my eyes.  They are still as exciting as

I remember them down the Cavern

THE 60s REVISTED AT THE AINTREE INSTITUTE

After a successful appearance at The Mathew St Festival 2002,

Faron decided to keep together the group he formed for the festival.

This band re-creates the real excitement and energy of Merseybeat

And even the audience go away feeling tired.

Originally the group were only put together to do 2 shows one the

Festival the other THE 60s REVISTED AT THE AINTREE INSTITUTE

Organised by the Merseycats.

But after the reaction from the audience and the verbal feedback fromThe audience, it was decided to deny other people seeing this

Group would be a crime.

Member of the Audience

Faron's Flamingo's "Wow "best band of the night, there was a magic when they were on stage. This man is a legend and his band

really compliment him, I hope to see more of this band that's for sure.

MERSEYCATS NEWSLETTER.

Meanwhile on the Monday, over at TP Malloys, Faron was making

A comeback and , oh boy! Did he go down a bomb

As everywhere across town the place was very busy and TP Molloys

Was no exception and Faron (ever the showman) with his new Flamingos Got a great reception with the crowds shouting for more.

CAT CHAT

Faron's Flamingo's were on next, this being the the first big

Show for the Merseycats since his comeback and he finished

His set to a well deserved standing ovation.

Mersey Gig Guide

The All Stars, appeared without their front man Lee CurtisWith their new bass player Keith Roberts, taking over the lead vocal Role.  They gave an exciting Rock n Roll show with great lead guitar From Jimmy Cave, who at times reminded me of Gary Moore, and drummer Arthur Davies gave a thunderous backing to the band, plus must be oneOf the best drum soloists in the region.  This band can do the business with or without Lee Curtis  .Mersey Gig Guide..

SCOTT WHEELER from Boston  e-mail

Last week I spent a good long stretch of time poring over the merseycats Website and all the great photos and news items thereon.  You folks have Done a fine job on the site.

I think it?s absolutely brilliant that Faron is performing again on a regular Basis and that he had the wisdom and good taste to ask you to be his Drummer.  Without question you?re the best drummer on MerseysideAnd he's very lucky indeed to have you.

I have e-mailed Derek Peel to enquire whether Merseycats would beInterested in having Me participate in a Jam night on Thursday Nov 20thI havn't heard back from him yet, but I?m sure I will.  If I am invited back and if You're available, would you be interested in backing me on thedrums that night?.  Ever since we played together a few years ago

I've wanted to get together onstage with you again and this

Might be the perfect opportunity     Scott Wheeler, USA

Farons Flamingos

I walked all over the festival to try and see Farons Flamingos, and they were no where to be seen, The only real Merseybeat band I saw was The Undertakers at The Liverpool...

Festival Organisers this was a disgrace and an insult to the real people you have, who started Merseybeat, and who are still living in or around your City.   remember the Beatles Got away and never came back.   but people and bands like Kingsize Taylor, Farons Flamingos, The Mojos, The Undertakers, The Del Renas are still doing their stuff on the Mersey scene.   The germans japanese etc would love to see and Meet original Merseybeat acts who shared the scene with the Beatles, I read Arty who i believe is Farons drummer, and he is so right.   they do get older and lots have left this earth.   So give us the chance to see them, and thank them for a wonderful musical legacy they have left us, these people are still at the moment LIVING LEGENDS

Arty,
A guy, or bloke as you would say, showed up at my gig tonight.  He came up to me to the stage and told me he was a drummer from Manchester, England.  I told him I was just there, etc.  I asked him if he'd heard of Arty Davies and he said yes!  He's a great drummer.  He said he'd never met you, but had heard of you.  Of course, he'd also heard of Kingsize Taylor, The Undertakers, Faron's Flamingoes, etc.  This guys name is Jazz Anon.  I'm not sure of the spelling of the last name, but he said he was born in Kenya in West Africa.  He must have grown up in England because his English accent was immaculate.  Nice guy.  He took some photos with my band.  I told him to look for you on the internet and maybe e mail you some photos.  Small world indeed.

I also will be coming this year.   and would like to see Farons Flamingos perform.

Merseycats Oct 2004

This man is a born performer. He is incapable of leaving the stage once he takes it. He has to be dragged off, reluctance all over his face. Who is he? He?s a legend of the Mersey scene, an innovator, an entertainer of almost unparalleled experience and a distributor of excitement and energy. He is, of course, the one and only Faron.

There he was on Thursday night, fronting a band consisting of Artie on drums, Chris Webster and Peter Cook, dressed in his striking all-black outfit and playing his equally striking and very rare 3-pick-up Gibson. Faron himself was playing a bass that, if it had been placed upright alongside him, would surely have reached past his shoulder, it was so big!

In an entertaining set featuring Faron?s trademark showmanship, we had Albatross from Peter, a drum solo from Artie, some lightning guitar work from Chris and a surprisingly tender version of George Jones? Today I started loving her again from Faron. Jamo, who hates to admit that he likes anyone at all, was heard to say that he loved the bones of the man and proved it by offering him a peanut while he was singing his final number! That this all too rare opportunity to see Faron was clearly welcomed by the audience was evidenced by the enthusiastic applause he received.

Nice one Arty, I wish you all success, Kindest regards Joe (Shakin all Over, guitarist)

Hi All

It always surprise me when a good topic comes like ?End of Season - Top 5 players? and some people have good suggestions from their own divisions and this gives us ALL a great insight as to who is playing in what division and how good they are and whether they should be playing for GB etc.. and then ALWAYS the slagging comes up against Arthur Davies and to be honest, it gets a little boring.

The last time I saw so many ?Anonymous? people was in the A.A. (you know when your car breaks down and you can?t get anyone to come and fix it? Joke) and feel if you are honest enough and have something positive or negative, then why not put in your name, I always do as I have no hidden agenda against anyone.

Well for those of you who don?t know too much about Arthur Davies and like to abuse him, slag him and his son Scott, let me tell you of my thoughts and observations on the guy.

When I use to play in the 70?s and 80?s and I use to play against him (I was as useful as a fart in a spacesuit) I would sit in awe of the things he could do with a basketball. I was impressed by his controlling an offence and defence, I was impressed by the encouragement he would give to anyone who asked him a question, I was impressed with his reading of the game, I was impressed with his uncanny observations of how a player would play against you, I was impressed with his stat?s taking, I was even impressed with his drumming skills (although the bands he plays with could do with new lead singers-joke).

I have no credentials (what I know about Basketball you could put on the back of a stamp) to tell you whether he was or was not the greatest player or coach that has ever played Wheelchair Basketball nor do I profess to be an expert on Arthur Davies, but I can honestly say if I was picking a team 20 years ago and we were playing in the GBWBA, he would have been the 1st.name on my teamsheet and to be honest with you all, there are very players I would say that about.

So lets cut out the ?Arthur & Scotty Slagging Show? and behave like adults and respect their opinions and try and have a constructive debate on a subject that generates such great interest like the one that started this topic.

This is purely my opinion of Arthur Davies and I have not spoken to him in months nor has he asked me to write this but I think a little more respect for a man who HAS given so much to the game and I personally wish him all the best in whatever path he takes and feel it?s GBWBA?s loss and I shall miss having him around me, because all those years ago when I was playing I asked him to show me one of his shots, he took the time and encouraged me to play the game and I thank him for that.

Thanks Arthur, you could say the success of the Dublin Celts come from the conversation we had in Ardee in Ireland 20 years ago and you encouraged me to stick at it and I am glad I did.

Peter Barron
Coach
Dublin Celts

Hi Arthur, sorry the injury has forced you into a premature retirement!  Seemed to remember you considering retiring from playing a couple of times in the past, so the injury has obviously forced your hand, so to speak.  I'm glad you are remaining in the game as a coach, I'm sure your knowledge as a vastly experienced player will serve you well in this capacity.  Me thinks it is time we actually created that "Hall of Fame" we keep thinking about!!   Best wishes, I'm certain everyone will miss you on court.
